Terminology

BIOS: Basic Input/Output System. An integral part of the computing system.
CPU:
Central Processing Unit. The brain behind your computer. Attaches to the motherboard.
E-Business: Doing business and advertising your company on the Internet and World Wide Web.
Firewall:
A combination of hardware and software which limits the exposure of a computer or group of computers to an attack from outside. Typically from the internet. The primary purpose of an Internet Firewall is to provide a single point of entry where a defense can be implemented.
Internet:
The world's largest computer network. A world wide source of information available to anyone with a computer, a modem and a telephone line. The Internet is used for research, e-mail, advertising and much, much more. The World Wide Web, (WWW), is an extension of the Internet.
Motherboard: The base chassis that all other components are attached to. Motherboards will include the BIOS and may include sound, USB ports, video, printer ports, CD, hard drive and/or floppy drive connections.
Networks: Multiple computers linked to each other and/or linked to a central server.
Operating System: The software that runs your computer and integrates all of your system's programs into one, seamless tool.
Proprietary: Meaning all upgrades MUST be performed using only that manufacturer's components.
Publishing:
Web Page publishing entails publishing your Web Page onto the World Wide Web. We not only design your new Web Page but also publish it to the World Wide Web.
Server: A computer dedicated to holding all of your data which other workstations may access.
Software: A computer program written and sold to provide you with a specific function. Examples are Word processing or typing software, spread sheet or financial software or accounting programs for your business.
Trojan: (Trojan Horse) Generic name for a virus or security-violating program that is disguised as something else. A Trojan could be software that appears to do something normal but which contains a trap door or attack program. A Trojan can be used to break into a network through a WEB Site. A Trojan is dangerous software.
Upgrades:
Installing newer and faster components or software will bring your computer to an up to date configuration, enabling it to run faster and handle newer applications.
Virus: A software program capable of replicating itself and usually capable of wreaking great harm on the system.
A malevolent software program that can and will destroy your computer's  hardware and software. Viruses can contain worms.
Worm:
A program that duplicates itself repeatedly, potentially worming itself through an entire network. An internet worm is perhaps the most famous: it successfully duplicates itself on many of the systems across the Internet. Viruses contain worms. A worm can be a hacker's tool to open a backdoor through which to gain access to your data. A worm can install spy ware to ferret out your identification or ad ware to bombard you with advertising and spam. NO COMPUTER TODAY IS SAFE FROM THESE INTRUSIONS. Even with proper precautions, you're still at risk. But at least the risk is minimized. Remember... the AntiVirus software people can only react after the virus writer has struck!
WWW:
The World Wide Web, (WWW), is an extension of the Internet. Through a Web page on the WWW, your business information, products and services are available to any one else with a computer, modem and a phone. Literally, the world is yours to advertise in.
Web Page: A Web Page is a page in a WEB Site. WEB pages make up the total of a WEB Site. A site can contain unlimited pages, each page covering a different subject or area. An example is a WEB page in the Mall-New Mexico. Mall-New Mexico is a WEB Site and the "Store Fronts" are it's WEB pages.
Web Site: A Web Site is your presence on the World Wide Web. Your Advertisement, so to speak. In it you can advertise to the world all about your company. Keep in mind that ONLY that information you wish to be known... will be there. NO ONE can look at your company's business records unless YOU WANT to publish them.
Workstation:
A single computer for each desk or work area which draws upon a server for information.
World Wide Web: The World Wide Web, (WWW), is an extension of the Internet. Through a Web page on the WWW, your business information, products and services are available to any one else with a computer, modem and a phone. Literally, the world is yours to advertise in.
Preventative Maintenance:
Periodic maintenance of your computer to keep it functioning correctly. Preventative Maintenance includes cleaning, optimizing your files and tweaking the system to remain at optimum speed and efficiency.
