BIOS: Basic Input/Output System. An integral part of the computing
system.
CPU: Central
Processing Unit. The brain behind your computer. Attaches to the motherboard.
E-Business:
Doing business and advertising your company on the Internet and World
Wide Web.
Firewall: A combination of hardware
and software which limits the exposure of a computer or group of computers
to an attack from outside. Typically from the internet. The primary
purpose of an Internet Firewall is to provide a single point of entry
where a defense can be implemented.
Internet: The world's largest computer network. A world wide source of
information available to anyone with a computer, a modem and a telephone line.
The Internet is used for research, e-mail, advertising and much, much more. The
World Wide Web, (WWW), is an extension of the Internet.
Motherboard: The base chassis that all other components are attached to.
Motherboards will include the BIOS and may include sound,
USB ports, video, printer ports, CD, hard drive and/or floppy drive connections.
Networks: Multiple computers linked to each other and/or linked to a central
server.
Operating System: The software that runs your computer and
integrates all of your system's programs into one, seamless tool.
Proprietary: Meaning all upgrades MUST be performed using only that
manufacturer's components.
Publishing: Web Page publishing entails publishing your
Web Page onto the World Wide Web. We not only design your new Web Page but also
publish it to the World Wide Web.
Server: A computer dedicated to holding all of your data which other
workstations may access.
Software: A computer program written and sold to provide
you with a specific function. Examples are Word processing or typing software,
spread sheet or financial software or accounting programs for your business.
Trojan: (Trojan
Horse) Generic name for a virus or security-violating program that is
disguised as something else. A Trojan could be software that appears to do
something normal but which contains a trap door or attack program. A
Trojan can be used to break into a network through a WEB Site. A Trojan is
dangerous software.
Upgrades:
Installing newer and faster components or software will bring your
computer to an up to date configuration, enabling it to run faster and
handle newer applications.
Virus: A
software program capable of replicating itself and usually capable of
wreaking great harm on the system. A
malevolent software program that can and will destroy your
computer's hardware and software. Viruses can contain worms.
Worm: A program that duplicates itself
repeatedly, potentially worming itself through an entire network. An
internet worm is perhaps the most famous: it successfully duplicates
itself on many of the systems across the Internet. Viruses contain worms.
A worm can be a hacker's tool to open a backdoor through which to gain
access to your data. A worm can install spy ware to ferret out your
identification or ad ware to bombard you with advertising and spam. NO
COMPUTER TODAY IS SAFE FROM THESE INTRUSIONS. Even with proper precautions,
you're still at risk. But at least the risk is minimized. Remember... the AntiVirus
software people can only react after the virus writer has struck!
WWW: The World Wide Web, (WWW), is an extension of the Internet.
Through a Web page on the WWW, your business information, products and services
are available to any one else with a computer, modem and a phone. Literally, the
world is yours to advertise in.
Web Page: A Web Page
is a page in a WEB Site. WEB pages make up the total of a WEB Site. A site
can contain unlimited pages, each page covering a different subject or
area. An example is a WEB page in the Mall-New Mexico. Mall-New Mexico is
a WEB Site and the "Store Fronts" are it's WEB pages.
Web Site: A Web
Site is your presence on the World Wide Web. Your
Advertisement, so to speak. In it you can advertise to the world all about your
company. Keep in mind that ONLY that information you wish to be known... will be
there. NO ONE can look at your company's business records unless YOU WANT to
publish them.
Workstation: A single computer for each desk or work area which draws upon
a server for information.
World Wide Web: The World Wide Web, (WWW), is an extension of the Internet.

are available to any one else with a computer, modem and a phone. Literally, the
world is yours to advertise in.
Preventative
Maintenance: Periodic maintenance of your computer to
keep it functioning correctly. Preventative Maintenance includes cleaning,
optimizing your files and tweaking the system to remain at optimum speed and
efficiency.
